Wimbledon started this Monday, but there are already many incredible results. Many dark horses won in the first two rounds. Due to the huge number of Eastern European tennis players, they were also part of the surprise – in some cases on the lucky, on others on the unlucky end.
In the first round, Nadal was defeated by Belgian dark horse Steve Darcias. But OK, such a big surprise almost always happens in a tennis tournament. This year it didn’t stop there. Yesterday Ukranian Sergiy Stakhovsky defeated Roger Federer in 4 sets. Michelle Larcher De Brito from Portugal defeated Sharapova in two sets.
Serbian Viktor Troicki‘s draws show well the ubiquity of Eastern European tennis players. In the first round he surprisingly defeated fellow Serbian Tipsarević then went on to defeat Russian Andrey Kuznetsov. In the next round, he will play against another Russian, Mikhail Youzhny.
Former world number one Jelena Janković was also defeated by a fellow Serbian, Vesna Dolonc. Other surprise results include:
- Petra Cetkovska (CZE) – Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) . 6:2, 6:2
- Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) – Ana Ivanović (SRB) . 6:3, 6:3
- Sara Errani (ITA) – Monica Puig (PUR – that’s Puerto Rico!). 3:6, 2:6
- Azarenka quit because of injury
This is definitely more than the usual amount of surprises. In the case of Federer it could be simply the revenge of Wimbledon: in the first round he did the unthinkable by playing in shoes that were not entirely white!
Next match: Federer falls out of the tournament.
In the case of the others the grass may be the reason. There were lots of spills and many injuries: Azarenka, Sharapova, Wozniacki, Isner, Tsonga, and Nadal-beater Darcis. Injuries and falls do happen, but this seems far too many, even though the organizers insist that there’s nothing wrong with the grass. Sharapova rarely falls, but she fell many times during her last match. And here’s Azarenka’s injury:
Azarenka managed to get up and win that match but she couldn’t start the next match because of her injury. The two number ones Novak Djoković and Serena Williams are still in and so is Andy Murray. Will there be more surprises? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
